On March 20, she is released from the Promises Malibu Treatment Center after completing its program during her one-month stay.

Brit & K-Fed's Custody Battle

After their divorce is finalized, Federline files for primary physical custody of their two boys and subpoenas Spears' friend Alli Sims, bodyguard Daimon Shippen and former assistant Shannon Funk to testify about her parenting skills. In September, a judge rules that Spears must undergo random drug testing, meet with a "parenting coach" twice a week, and with Federline complete a program called "Parenting Without Conflict." A few weeks later, she loses temporary custody of her boys.

Visibly nervous, she tottered around the stage, dancing tentatively and doing nothing that sounded or looked like real live singing." The following week, her management company The Firm quits.

One day after Spears is ordered to pay $120,000 in lawyer fees for Federline, her new album Blackout receives critical approval and strong early sales. It sells 290,000 copies in its first week, entering at No.2 on Billboard's 200 album chart.

Britney's Custody Crisis

After appearing late to court regarding her custody battle with Federline, Spears locks herself in a room with one of her children at her L.A. home and refuses to hand him over to Federline. After a four-hour standoff, Spears is taken out on a gurney (left) and hospitalized for mental evaluation. Custody of the children, Preston, 2, and Jayden, 1, is transferred to Federline. On Jan. 5, Spears, who is reportedly diagnosed as bipolar, is released from the hospital.

Lynne & Jamie to the Rescue

Spears is hospitalized again for psychiatric evaluation. "She went willingly. It was like something in her heart was telling her she should go. She knew something was wrong," constant confidant Sam Lutfi tells PEOPLE. But Spears' parents, Jamie and Lynne, battle Lutfi over who decides what is best for Spears. On Feb. 1, Jamie gains legal control over his daughter's affairs, and they are granted a restraining order against Lutfi – who Lynne claims used drugs and insults to control Spears. Spears' Dad, Lawyer Trade Legal Barbs

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Britney Spears' father and a lawyer who claims to represent her traded legal barbs Monday in an intensifying fight over whether James Spears is violating her civil rights by controlling her finances and life.

Attorney John Eardley, who told The Associated Press he was the "only person who represents Britney Spears," filed documents in federal court asserting that she is being held by her father in a situation that violates her civil rights.

A lawyer for James Spears said in papers filed Monday that Eardley cannot represent the singer because a probate judge in state court found that Britney Spears "lacks the capacity to hire an attorney, and Mr. Eardley cannot remove the conservatorship proceedings on his own behalf."

The pop star, 26, and her estate were placed under a temporary conservatorship after she was taken to UCLA Medical Center on Jan. 31, her second hospitalization in a month. Conservatorships are granted for people deemed unable to care for themselves or their affairs.

Eardley took aim at James Spears in legal documents filed Friday.

"Mr. Spears has now moved into her house and has taken control of her financial assets, as well as her physical custody, all without the benefit of a hearing where Ms. Spears would be present," he said.

Eardley said that Spears has never been on good terms with her father and said he was "concerned for
the emotional and physical safety of Britney under these circumstances."

In his motion, Eardley said Spears had "been in a form of private confinement for nearly a month. Certainly, at this point, it is likely that circumstances have changed and it is time that the conservatee be brought into court for a hearing, where the court can evaluate her in person and hear testimony directly from her."

The document suggests she be allowed to retain her own medical professionals to evaluate her condition.

"There are financial issues which involve the possible misappropriation of assets," Eardley said but did not elaborate.

Meanwhile, attorney Jeffrey Wexler, representing James Spears, filed a response Monday complaining that the effort to move the case to federal court is without legal basis and is draining James Spears financially.

Wexler said that the conservator has already incurred more than $42,898 in legal fees to fight the effort launched by Eardley. Wexler argued the law being cited by Eardley applies only to cases of racial discrimination.

James Spears has asked to send the matter back to state court and to award him attorneys' fees.

In the phone interview Eardley said he had filed additional documents under seal Monday and expected a hearing to be set soon.

Asked when he last consulted with Britney Spears, Eardley said, "I talked to her a few days ago and someone wrestled the phone away from her. I've not talked to her since then."

Wow! That was a big breast britney!!

why we like her?

Britney Spears -- what can we say about the former good girl who teased us with her blonde hair, erotic dance moves and sexual innuendos? And then became a single mother with tattoos and a shaved head? No matter what she has up her sleeve -- or miniskirt -- the world just can't get enough of her.

why is she famous?

Unless you're living under a rock, you know that Britney Spears is one of the most popular female artists on the planet, with worldwide sales topping the 20 million mark. While her biggest hit continues to be her first, "...Baby One More Time," Britney's music still invades the airwaves and MTV, and her face is constantly in the tabloids.

Britney Spears Gets a Visit From Her Sons Again | Britney Spears
Britney Spears saw her sons again Monday, while her father sought to quickly end a civil rights challenge to his control of her affairs.

The singer's children Preston, 2, and Jayden, 1, were driven to her Studio House by Kevin Federline's bodyguard for a three-hour visit.

It was the second visitation in three days; on Saturday, Spears saw her children for the first time since Jan. 3 after working out a structured visitation arrangement with Federline.

Meanwhile, attorneys for Spears's father Jamie filed another round of papers in federal court on Monday, urging a judge to quickly end a civil rights challenge to Jamie's control of his daughter's $100 million estate and keep the co-conservatorship case in state court.

Lawyer Needs More Time

Jon Eardley, an attorney who claims to represent the pop star, had been asked by U.S. District Court Judge Philip Gutierrez to file papers by Feb. 22 explaining the civil rights challenge. Instead, Eardley on Friday told the judge he needed more time to formally file.

In legal documents, Eardley claims that Britney retained him Feb. 12 before her phone was taken away and the line disconnected. Eardley also continued to maintain that the conservatorship case in state court violates her constitutional rights.

But in motion filed Monday, the conservatorship attorneys say Eardley, in addition to failing to meet the court's filing deadline, has not proven that he even qualifies as Britney's attorney or addressed the most fundamental legal issues in the case.

The conservatorship motion asks that the case be immediately returned to Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz, and that Eardley be forced to reimburse $43,000 in attorney fees.

While the civil rights issue remained unresolved in federal court, the conservatorship case in state court is stalled.

"There's nothing for this court to do today. We're in a holding pattern," said Goetz at a hearing Friday.

Britney Spears's Night Out with Dad

After a three-hour visit with her sons on Saturday (her first since Jan. 3), Britney Spears continued her family time Saturday night, stepping out to Mastro's Steakhouse in Beverly Hills with her father, Jamie.

Just before 8 p.m., the pop star and her dad were joined by an assistant, a family friend and two bodyguards for dinner. Clad in a purple silk dress, Spears smiled and appeared in good spirits as she headed inside.

"Britney looked stunning and everyone turned around to get a glimpse of her," says a witness at the restaurant, adding that the group lead Spears to a private dining room. "Everyone seemed extremely protective of Britney."

The party of six dined on a seafood tower with lobster, steak, french fries and lobster mashed potatoes. But Spears's good mood seemed to diminish over dinner. According to an observer, "She seemed quiet." After numerous bathroom and cigarette breaks, Spears and co. left the restaurant around 9:30 p.m., making their way through a pack of photographers with the help of restaurant staff.

Asked if he'd ever helped a celebrity exit the restaurant, a chef told PEOPLE, "Never! It was like being in a war zone. I almost lost my [chef's] hat."
